How to Choose an SEO Company in Kolkata

Kolkata has hundreds of firms selling SEO. How to read their claims, what a proposal should contain, and the questions that expose who actually does the work.

Search for an SEO company in Kolkata and you will find the first problem immediately: every result is an SEO company describing itself, ranked by how good it is at exactly the thing it is selling. That makes the search result a portfolio, of a sort. It does not make it a shortlist.

The second problem is the claims. This is a market where "98% success rate", "guaranteed page one" and "ranks in 30 days" appear on real agency websites, written by firms that know perfectly well that nobody controls Google's results. Choosing well here is mostly the work of reading those claims correctly, and this guide is about how.

Start with what a ranking claim actually means

No SEO company controls where Google places a page. Not us, not anyone. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says this plainly, and it is the single most useful sentence to hold in mind while reading agency websites.

So when a firm advertises a success rate, ask what the denominator is. A "98% success rate" can mean ninety-eight percent of hand-picked keywords, or of clients still paying, or of nothing measurable at all. When a firm guarantees page one, the guarantee is either for a keyword so obscure that ranking for it means nothing, or it is a promise the firm intends to renegotiate when the invoice is already six months deep.

We will say it about ourselves for clarity: Digi Kydo does not promise rankings, at any price. What an honest firm commits to is the work — what will be diagnosed, fixed, written and reported, on what schedule — because the work is the only part that is actually in the agency's hands.

The four kinds of SEO firm you will meet in this city

The volume shop. Sells packages by count: so many blogs, so many backlinks, so many "submissions" per month. The deliverables are real in the sense that they happen, and close to worthless in the sense that counting outputs is not a strategy. Directory submissions in bulk are work from a decade ago, and a fixed monthly number of backlinks means somebody is buying them — a risk that lands on your domain, not theirs.

The reseller. A sales operation with delivery outsourced, sometimes out of the city, sometimes out of the country. The tell is the meeting: nobody present can answer a technical question about your site without checking with someone who is not in the room.

The performance agency. Genuinely capable, usually strongest in paid media, treats SEO as the slow product it retains clients with. Not dishonest — but the slow work gets the leftover attention, and SEO is entirely made of slow work.

The firm that does the work in-house. Smaller, names the people who will actually touch your site, can show you a page and tell you who wrote it and why. Slower to impress in a pitch, and the only category built around what you are buying.

Check them the way they claim they can help you

An SEO company's own visibility is a fair test — it is the product, demonstrated. Search for the services they claim to provide and see whether they appear, and read what you find with some care: a page that ranks by shouting "best SEO company" at you is demonstrating a different skill from a page that answers your actual questions.

Then look past the agency to its clients, because client sites are the real portfolio. Ask for two or three, and look at them live rather than in screenshots. Are the pages quick on a phone? Is the writing by someone who understood the business, or assembled from other pages on the same subject? Search for something that client's customer would search, and see what happens.

What you should not lean on is awards, badges and "top 10 SEO companies in Kolkata" listicles. Many of those lists are pay-to-play, and several are published by agencies ranking themselves first. Treat them as advertising, because that is what they are.

The questions that expose the difference in one meeting

Five questions do most of the sorting.

"What is wrong with our site right now?" A serious firm looked before the meeting. You want specifics — a page that is not indexed, two pages competing for the same query, a title tag repeated across the whole site — not adjectives.

"Which keywords would you not chase for us, and why?" Keyword difficulty is real and an honest answer names the fights not worth picking this year. A firm with no such list has not estimated difficulty for anybody.

"Who writes the content, and can I read something they wrote?" Ask for a live page. Read it. That is what your pages will read like.

"What does month three look like if nothing has moved?" SEO has a flat middle, always. You are listening for a plan for it — what gets rechecked, what gets iterated — rather than reassurance that there will not be one.

"What do you need from us to even start?" The honest answer is access and time: Search Console, analytics, the website itself, and someone who can approve content. A firm that needs nothing from you is planning to work on the surface.

Reading the proposal

A serious SEO proposal for a Kolkata business contains, in some order: what is currently broken, and the order it gets fixed; which pages will target which searches, with existing overlaps resolved; a small number of pages to be written or rebuilt, each with a reason; what happens to your Google Business Profile, listings and reviews, because local visibility is half the game in a city-level market; and what is measured, from which date, with rank checked one way and reported honestly.

That last point deserves a sentence. Ask any prospective firm *how* they will report your rankings — which tool, checked from where, how often. A firm that reads Search Console's average position back to you as "your rank" is reporting a number that does not mean what it appears to mean, and the difference between the two is precisely where inflated reporting lives.

And on price: in this market, real SEO work is a retainer measured in tens of thousands of rupees a month, because it is people's time — a diagnostician, a writer, someone technical. Our own engagements start at ₹25,000 per month, and we would rather state that plainly than be one more "affordable SEO packages" page. What is scoped inside a retainer is on our SEO services in Kolkata page; how the search work sits alongside everything else an agency does is on the wider digital marketing programme page.

Making the decision

Shortlist two or three firms and the proposals will often look similar. The tie breaks on duller things: who exactly will do the work, how quickly they answered your questions, and whether anyone told you something you did not want to hear. That last one is the strongest signal in the entire process — a firm that corrects you before it has your money will still be correcting you afterwards, which is what you are paying for.

We have written a longer version of this evaluation, aimed at organic growth generally rather than SEO alone, in our guide to choosing an agency for organic growth. And we are, of course, one of the firms you would be evaluating: Digi Kydo is a digital marketing company in Kolkata, working from Ballygunge, and this page is our answer to the first question above being asked of us. You can read who we are on our about page or book a consultation — it is a paid session, ₹1,500, with the founder, which is itself a statement about how we think this should be done.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost in Kolkata?

Legitimate SEO work is priced as a monthly retainer, because it is skilled people's time applied continuously: diagnosis, technical fixes, writing and measurement. Very cheap packages exist and are structured around countable outputs — bulk submissions, purchased links, thin blogs — which range from useless to actively risky for the site. Our own engagements start at ₹25,000 per month. Whatever the figure, the proposal should say what work the money buys each month, and a package priced too low to include a writer's time cannot include real content.

Can an SEO company guarantee first page rankings on Google?

No. Google's ranking systems are not controlled by any agency, and Google's own documentation on hiring SEOs warns against firms that claim otherwise. A guarantee is achievable only by choosing keywords so obscure that ranking for them has no commercial value, or it is a sales device the firm expects to renegotiate later. What a competent firm can honestly commit to is the work and the method, reported accurately, with rank measured the same way every week.

How long does SEO take to show results in a competitive market like Kolkata?

Months rather than weeks, and the exact timeline depends on the starting point of the site, the competition on each keyword and how much repair work precedes the growth work. City-level commercial keywords in Kolkata are contested by established firms with years of accumulated content and links, so a new entrant should expect a long climb on those, with earlier movement on more specific, less contested searches. Any firm quoting a fixed timeline to a specific position is guessing at best.

What should I check before hiring an SEO agency?

Their own visibility for the services they sell. Two or three client sites, viewed live rather than in screenshots. Who specifically will do the work, and a sample of the writer's published work. How they measure and report rankings, and whether they distinguish rank-tracker data from Search Console averages. And what they refuse to promise — the firm that will promise anything is the one to avoid.

Is it better to hire a local SEO company in Kolkata or a remote one?

The technical and content work can be done from anywhere. Local matters for the parts that involve the physical business: photographing premises for listings, understanding the neighbourhoods customers actually search from, and sitting with the people who answer your phone. If local search — the map pack, "near me" queries, neighbourhood-level intent — is a meaningful share of your market, an agency that knows the city has a real advantage.
